About Us

Malayalam Language and literature was part of the intermediate study from the inception of UCC, i.e. from the year 1921. The Department of Malayalam came into existence in 1969 by starting of B.A. degree course in Malayalam. It was later elevated to the status of a Post Graduate and Research department in 1993 and 1989 respectively. Ever since its inception, there has been a team of eminent teachers working with us. They include leading figures in the world of Malayalam literature like Prof. Kuttippuzha Krishnapilla, an atheist and philosopher and Malayalam literary critic Prof. D.P. Unni. These great Acharyas made remarkable impressions in the realm of higher education in Kerala and worldwide. Late Dr K. Narayanan Nair, poet and a research guide  also served our department. Endowment  scholarships were instituted in the name of  Prof. Kuttipuzha Krishna Pillai, Prof. D.P. Unni, Prof. Varghese Ittiavirah, P.V. Narayanan Namboothiri, Fr. Dr. C.M. Jose, Prof. K. K. Abraham, Prof. Thomas Abraham, Prof. O. Abraham, Dr. Thonnakkal Narayanan, Kumari Vijayasree Menon for the benefit of Students of Malayalam Department.

We have an Advisory Board for providing guidance and direction to the faculty to maintain high standards of research and study. Dr K. M. Anil (Director, Thunchath Ezhuthachan Malayalam University), Prof. K.P. Mohanan (Secretary, Kerala Sahitya Academy), Mrs. M.T. Saramma ,(Retd. Professor, Dept. of Malayalam, Union Christian College, Aluva), Prof. E. S. Satheesan, (Retd Professor, Sree Kerala Varma College, Thrissur, Vice Chairman, Education,Culture & Youth welfare Planning Committee.),  Dr. N. Ajayakumar (Retd. Professor in Malayalam, Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kalady), are the Advisory Board Members. Students of the department have secured several ranks in University examinations and qualified in national level examinations (NET/JRF) in the past years. The Department of Malayalam signed MoUs with Kerala Bhasha Institute, Bellarmine University, U.S.A, and Kuttipuzha Smaraka Samskarika Padana Kendram. Many programmes like performance of cultural art forms, seminars, discussions were conducted under these MoUs. The department gives meticulous attention to deploy experimental techniques in teaching and learning methods. Ever since the inception of the undergraduate program, we had conducted collaborative programmes, conferences, workshops etc. for the benefit of students. In short, the department of Malayalam is actively engaged in studies, activities and projects that would empower the Malayalam language for handling any area of knowledge at language levels.
